As Lilongwe City Holds WAD & IACM
The Lilongwe City Mayor Councillor Richard Banda pledged office space at one of the City Council’s premises to Y-Plus. The pledge was made upon request by one of the Y-Plus clients identified as Rachael during the 2023 Lilongwe City Council World Aids Day and International Aids Candlelight Memorial that was held on 12 December at the Area 23 Police Ground in the State House Ward.
Rachael, in her 20s took the opportunity when she was offered time to share her life experience. She said that it was in 2013 when her grandmother advised her to go for testing upon observing her frequent illness.
“After testing positive at 13, I had thought all was lost until I joined a Teen Club at Partners in Hope. This was my turning point. Later I joined Y-Plus where I have further learnt to live positively but I thank Partners in Hope’s Teen Club which was my stepping stone. Look at me now, I don’t think there is any challenger who can suggest that, I am positive. Of course, I really experienced stigma and discrimination as a child growing into a youth but it is all over. It took my personal approach to my life. I am now a qualified primary school teacher because I tuned misfortunes to fortunes,” she narrated.
